Roanoke Island on the NC Outer Banks is actually an island itself, lying behind the Outer Banks and the mainland. Roanoke Island is one of the Outer Banks' primary visitor destinations. Visitors often make Roanoke Island and Manteo their home base for vacation and daytrip out to the other Outer Banks areas of interest, which is a good strategy. Roanoke Island is home to four of the Outer Banks’ most popular attractions, The Lost Colony, Elizabethan Gardens, Elizabeth II Historic Site, NC Aquarium, and the Roanoke Island Festival Park. Golfing, the beaches, and shopping, and a mired of activities will keep you occupied through your vacation. Do not plan on seeing or doing everything that Roanoke Island has to offer in one short vacation. Chances are you will be coming back to the Roanoke Island Outer Banks for vacation for some time.
